Carigara, Leyte – Eastern Visayas State University – Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC) successfully hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Seminar on October 29, 2025, at the EVSU-CC Mini Gymnasium. The initiative, spearheaded by the Campus Clinic, led by Bonita Shigella Cotoner, RN, MAN, and Gender and Development Coordinator, Engr. Leo De Guzman, ME, aimed to educate the academic community on the importance of early detection and prevention of breast cancer.

The seminar saw active participation from students, faculty, and non-teaching personnel, underscoring the community’s commitment to health and wellness. A highlight of the event was the presence of a dedicated group of Breast Cancer Advocates, including Liza Basillo Calda, Lea Advincula, Paul Advincula, Sharon Dolina, and Dr. Rosalie Ocaris. Their presence provided invaluable insights and personal experiences, deeply resonating with the audience.

Nurse Cotoner emphasized the critical role of awareness in combating the disease. “Early detection is key to successful treatment,” she stated, urging everyone to conduct regular self-examinations and seek professional medical advice. Engr. De Guzman reiterated the university’s commitment to promoting health-conscious practices and fostering a supportive environment for all its members.

The seminar featured presentations on testimonies from breast cancer survivor speaker including risk factors, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and treatment options for breast cancer. Attendees were also given some informative brochures on breast cancer awareness. The event concluded with a call to action, encouraging everyone to be proactive about their health and spread awareness within their respective communities.
