Training in Mangrove Crab Culture Empowers Fisherfolk in Brgy. Parina, Carigara, Leyte

๐˜พ๐™–๐™ง๐™ž๐™œ๐™–๐™ง๐™–, ๐™‡๐™š๐™ฎ๐™ฉ๐™šย โ€“ The Fisheries Department of EVSU-Carigara Campus, in collaboration with the Carigara Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) , BFAR 08, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), successfully conducted an extension activity titled โ€œTraining in Mangrove Crab Cultureโ€ at the EVSU CC Aquafarm in Brgy. Parina, Carigara, Leyte, on January 31, 2025.

 

The training was attended by DSWD Sustainable Livelihood Program recipients from Brgy. Parina. It served as the initial engagement under the campus’s Capacity Advancement and Training for Community Harvesters (CATCH)ย  in Fisheries project. Co-facilitated by Fisheries Department faculty members Ma. Theresa Salamida, Roan Merelos, and Rene Lino Pore, along with non-teaching staff, the training provided valuable insights into crab biology, sustainable crab culture techniques, crab fattening, and pond and pen management, aiming to enhance the livelihood opportunities of local fisherfolk.

 

The event also highlighted by ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Mud Crab Culture Project, led by representatives from DSWD, the Carigara MAO, and BFAR 08. This project aims to support members of two fisherfolk organizations in Brgy. Parina, empowering them with sustainable aquaculture skills to improve their economic stability.

 

The Fisheries Department of EVSU Carigara Campus and its partners remain committed to future engagements that will strengthen local fisheries development and community sustainability in the region.
