Carigara, Eastern Visayas, Philippines – Eastern Visayas State University – Carigara Campus (EVSU-CC) has taken a significant step toward advancing its technical capacity with a Geographic Information System (GIS) training program conducted in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman).
The two-day training, held on July 3-4, 2025, at the EVSU-CC Library, was facilitated by Assistant Professor Vanessa Joy Anacta, Ph.D., of the UP Diliman Department of Geography, College of Social Sciences and Philosophy. The initiative aimed to equip EVSU-CC faculty and staff with essential GIS skills applicable to environmental management, disaster risk reduction, and local development planning.
The training was a joint effort between the EVSU-CC Research Office, headed by Ma. Theresa Salamida, MBio, and the Extension Services Office, led by Amelita A. Ariza, MAEd. Professor Anacta was joined by student-interns from UP Diliman who provided additional technical support throughout the sessions.
Day one featured a comprehensive introduction to GIS, covering its basic principles and applications, followed by a hands-on workshop. Day two allowed participants to further develop their skills through practical exercises, culminating in the presentation of their GIS project outputs.
The program provided participants with in-depth knowledge of GIS fundamentals, data management, spatial analysis, and map creation. Faculty and staff gained valuable experience in using GIS software to process real-world data, visualize geographic patterns, and draw meaningful conclusions to support data-driven decision-making.
“This training enhances our faculty’s capability to conduct advanced research and contribute more effectively to local and regional development,” said Salamida. “It aligns with EVSU-CC’s commitment to integrating innovative tools in research, instruction, and extension services.”
The partnership with UP Diliman underscores the value of inter-university collaboration in promoting technological advancement and academic growth. The new GIS skills acquired through this training are expected to bolster EVSU-CC’s contributions to the development of local land use plans, community mapping initiatives, and disaster preparedness strategies across Eastern Visayas.
As EVSU-CC continues to expand its expertise in geospatial technology, the university remains steadfast in its mission to foster sustainable development and provide practical solutions that benefit communities throughout the region.
