HOPE Shines in Palawan: Ariza Clinches 2nd Best Paper at International PAEPI Conference

CORON, PALAWAN — Breaking barriers and redefining rehabilitation, Amy A. Ariza, the Extension Head of her institution, secured the 2nd Best Paper award at the prestigious Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementors (PAEPI) International Conference, held at the Tag Resort from April 14–17, 2026.

Ariza’s winning entry, titled “Empowering Persons Deprived of Liberty through Holistic Extension Services: The Program HOPE Model,” stood out among 40 high-caliber contenders in the Culture, Social, and Behavioral Sciences category.

A Model for Social Transformation

The paper showcased the Program HOPE Model, an extension framework of Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU)-Carigara Campus. Developed through a strategic partnership with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Carigara, Leyte, the model delivers comprehensive support to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). By fusing social, psychological, and vocational interventions, the program drives genuine reformation and ensures a smoother path toward social reintegration.

The adjudicating panel praised the study for its:

Deep Social Impact: Addressing the often-overlooked needs of the incarcerated population.
Methodological Rigor: Demonstrating clear, measurable outcomes of the “HOPE” framework.
Scalability: Offering a blueprint that other extension program implementors can replicate across the Philippines and beyond.

The Global Stage
The PAEPI International Conference is a premier gathering of educators, researchers, and extension workers dedicated to community development. This year’s event in the scenic town of Coron brought together experts from various nations to share strategies for sustainable and inclusive growth.

“Winning this recognition is not just a personal milestone, but a testament to our commitment to serving the marginalized. Program HOPE is about seeing the humanity in everyone and providing the tools for a second chance,” Ariza remarked following the awarding ceremony.
